About Medical Gastroenterology

  • Medical gastroenterology is a branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders. Gastroenterologists diagnose and treat conditions affecting the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder. Common conditions treated include acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and liver diseases.

  • Common Gastroenterological Conditions

    • Acid Reflux (GERD): A chronic condition where stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms. This reflux can lead to irritation of the esophageal lining, potentially causing damage over time.
    • Gastroenteritis: Involves inflammation of the stomach and intestines, often due to infection by bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Symptoms may include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and cramping.
    • Liver Diseases: Conditions affecting the liver, such as hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and cirrhosis.
    • Pancreatitis: Inflammation of the pancreas, which can be acute or chronic.
    • GI Bleeding: Bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract, which can manifest as blood vomiting (hematemesis) or blood in stool (hematochezia).
    • Acid Ingestion: Ingestion of acidic substances, including accidental swallowing of bathroom cleaning acids or other harmful substances.
    • Acidity: Excessive acid in the stomach leading to symptoms like heartburn, indigestion, and discomfort.
    • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): A disorder affecting the large intestine, causing symptoms like cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea or constipation.
    • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
    • All Types of Jaundice: A condition characterized by the yellowing of the skin and eyes due to high levels of bilirubin in the blood. It can result from various causes, including liver diseases, hemolysis, or bile duct obstruction. Types include pre-hepatic, hepatic, and post-hepatic jaundice.
